Dead Parrot

Bob Carr on a statutory Bill of Rights.

A Bill of Rights is more likely to be an attack on human rights. The right to free speech would no doubt be constrained by the right of select groups not to be offended.

A constitutional Bill of Rights which enshrined freedom of speech, due process and the equality before the law would be a fine thing. No such thing is presently contemplated.

  1. A bill of rights is not the sort of thing one would oppose, but really, it has very limited merit. If a government is committed to human rights, it doesn't need a bill to effect change. Likewise, a bill can be worked around by a corrupt government. Just look at the US under Bush.

  2. The name "Bill of Rights" is less relevant than the content. Without clear and unconstrained protection of basic rights like free speech and due process it will do more harm than good.
